Episode 14: Mental Health of Healthcare Workers; Why it matters, How it affects Patient Care

Providing care for a variety of patients, including those who have experienced significant physical trauma, and dealing with patient mortality, is a tough job that needs a great deal of time flexibility and resilience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the mental health of healthcare workers (HCW) became crucial as these professionals were at the forefront of providing life-saving services while risking their own lives. Research officer Sabina Odera of the Institute for Human Development works on the resilience and mental health of Kenyan community health workers. She discusses the importance of healthcare workers’ mental health in this episode; how it affects patient care, and the necessity of offering mental health resources, support programs, stress-reduction techniques, and fostering a culture of prioritizing the well-being of HWCs.
